Lab Activity: Learning area of irregular figures like palm of hand

Students trace the outline of their hand on a square-lined paper. Now they put a tick mark on the full squares and cross mark on the half squares. They also put a tick mark on the squares which are more than half. Now they counted the full squares and half squares. So the approximate area of the palm of their hand is = Number of full squares + half squares/2. For example : Number of full squares are 64 and numbe r of half squares are 38 so the total area = 64 + ( 38 / 2 ) = 64 + 19 = 83 squares.
